In the News: Demonstrators, mainly women, protested against the official confirmation nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who will fill the seat of late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the Supreme Court.
These women, who name themselves Little Red Cloaks, decided to demonstrate wearing red cloaks and white bonnets, an attire that is known from the Hulu original The Handmaid’s Tale.
The Handmaid’s Tale show is about oppressed women and the United States is taken over by fundamentalist Christians. This shows women living their lives based solely on having children and caring for the man.
These attires were worn to mock Judge Barrett after allegations regarding her religious belief with the Catholic group called People of Praise. Many of these allegations include the school’s policy of expulsion over the sexual orientation of the student. However, People of Praise has never released a statement that specifies any of these allegations, yet believe that once this information was brought to the media that it also involved Barrett in these specific beliefs.
This being said, Amy Coney Barrett has received backlash regarding her recent answer towards Senator Dianne Feinstein in which she asks Barrett if she believed that Roe v. Wade was wrongfully decided. Barrett responded explaining that she could not say yes since she did not have an agenda to support her argument.
This sparked the protests against Barrett with the characters of Hulu’s Handmaid’s Tale. People began protesting dressed as a character from the television show with signs that read, “My body, My choice!”
Barrett has repeatedly said she is committed to fulfilling the job “independently of the political branches and of my own preferences.”
