Suspect Arrested in Connection with Hit-And-Run that Killed Nicki Minaj’s Father
Polevich was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an auto accident with a fatality and tampering with evidence. According to his attorney, Michael Scotto, Polevich pleaded not guilty to both charges and was released on a $250,000 bond.
The victim of the hit-and-run was Robert Maraj, 64, later confirmed to be rapper Nicki Minaj’s father. Maraj was walking in Mineola, Long Island, on the evening of Feb. 12, when he was struck by the vehicle.
Polevich was in a white 1992 Volvo driving northbound on Roslyn Road when he allegedly hit Maraj, who was walking the same direction. Police say Maraj was likely walking in the street because the sidewalks were covered with snow.
Maraj was rushed to the hospital after he was hit, where he died later that night.
A criminal complaint reads, “The defendant then exited his vehicle, stood over the victim, asked him if ‘he was ok’, walked and returned to his vehicle and fled the scene.”
Nassau County Police Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick, the commanding officer of the homicide squad, described the “horrible accident” in a press conference Feb. 17.
Fitzpatrick said, “He got out of the car and he looked at the deceased and got into the car and made the conscious decision to leave. Instead of dialing 911 or calling an ambulance, he went home and secreted his vehicle.”
Court papers also say Polevich took a route home that avoided any cameras.
When Polevich arrived home, he hid his car in the garage and covered it with a tarp.
Police were later able to track the car back to the suspect’s home using security footage, even though Polevich attempted to alter the vehicle.
Police say that if Polevich had not fled the scene, the incident may have been classified as an auto accident with no criminal charges. Instead, Polevich raced home without calling the police or an ambulance, and authorities were not able to check if he was under the influence at the time of the incident.
Famous rapper and daughter of the victim, Nicki Minaj has not made any public comment on her father’s death.
